Benjamin Bellas, doesn’t matter that I followed the
rules, that I did everything right, doesn’t matter how well
I treated you…I didn’t have what it took to fill that
space…I was lacking what it was the others were able to
provide you, 2006, 1m4s
For
Bellas, sublimity is in the details; otherwise banal objects
and gestures into the void become epiphanies through his subtle
interventions. His work is the shooting star you’ve been
waiting for all evening but missed while blinking. Emphasis
is placed on the experience of creating these objects and gestures,
i.e. the visual form is an artifact whose purpose is to signify
the process by which the meaning of the piece is created. Lives

Jean-François
Leboeuf, Celluloid Barockeries, 2006, 5m1s
Celluloid
Barockeries is a self-representation and video-scratching
crossover. It shows an anarchic ensemble of television and cinema
snippets collected from our past and present “junk culture.”
The video is a repossession of material the mass medias offered
to/imposed on us. Lives and works in Montréal,

Shot
from within a gaming environment, Simulacra takes a
critical look at games that we continuously play. Just as virtual-reality
is a consensual hallucination, structures such as money, power,
and ownership are also consensual dreams. Lives and

The
world that I wish to transmit through this video is a suspended
world, floating, alleviating, happy … where each person
or object exceeds its being to join a fictional, marrowy world
rich with sensitivity … The city is deconstructed, split
up, dispersed in order to be rebuilt in a new form. Lives

Benjamin
Bellas, I was determined to make you love me; you were not
sure about my steady approach; but I was persistent in my efforts…gaining
ground with each passing moment…and finally you said it
‘I love you Benjamin, please never go away’ …and
it was at that moment I set my sights on doing so… for that
is what I had really wanted… the sensation of you desperately
pulling me towards you while I ran away, 2006, 1m21s

Jelka Milic,
first i have breakfast, 2006, 7m12s
The
individual search for personal freedom within a society with
hidden restrictions concerning one’s self-expression and
state of mind leads to endless labyrinths. The latter is especially
present in the globalised states of most European or pseudo-European
systems which allow the blending of cultures on a superficial
level and on the other create a grotesque, distorted reality
of ethnicity and lifestyle. Isolation appears in a much subtler
dimension and forces one to contemplate crucial existential
issues and dilemmas which are now mirrored through a new prism.
But first, one needs to have breakfast... Lives and

Skipping a Heartbeat, 2006, 6m
Skipping
a Heartbeat represents a contrast between innocence and
experience of love and/or loss of love. Light-hearted images
of hearts and flowers are dispersed constantly and overlay an
image of a despondent girl. As the video goes on, the movement
becomes a never-ending process and struggle where the romantic
notion of love and what the heart symbol represents can never
be met. Lives and works in Columbia, MO, USA.

Su-Ying Lee,
Daddy Goes to the Dentist, 2005, 2m59s
Daddy
Goes to the Dentist transgresses the roles of parent and
child. It is acceptable for a parent to document a child’s
every movement and subsequently display the images. Often parents
will document events which would be banal, private, or even
humiliating were it an adult. However, children’s bodies
and acts are voraciously recorded. Age and relationship create
authority to sanction such documentation. In Daddy Goes
to the Dentist, I invert this role. Viewers are asked to
consider the position of each participant in an event which
is at once banal, grotesque, and humourous. Lives and

Alla Girik
(d. 2006) & Oksana Shatalova, Wedding Dances, 2005,
9m57s
This
documentary video features seven modern-style Russian weddings
in the town of Rudny, Kazakhstan. Weddings and deaths are the
most important events in the life of a “little man.”
Not without reason, the wedding and the funeral, being the most
important rituals, are preserved in their archaic (pagan) forms.
The music is an old Soviet song—“The Ural Rowan-Tree”—about
love between factory workers. Oksana Shatalova lives
and works in Rudny, Kazakhstan. Selected Exhibitions

Living City takes multiple layers of urban scenes shot
in Tokyo, Japan, and, through the use of opacity and colour

N.B. Aldrich
& Zach Poff, Movement Reflection, 2005, 3m40s
Movement
Reflection’s audio, designed for a segment of a performance
by MAP Intermedia, is a recycling and abstraction of
a single synthesizer keystroke, processed via a simple algorithm
to pass through a fluctuating virtual resonant environment.
The video is a processed recording of the piece as performed
by Brendan McCall. The abstracted video was then recycled itself,
becoming the sole theatrical lighting for that segment of the
performance. Movement Reflection takes this entire
process one step further by removing the performance ‘context’
and presenting solely those design elements created for and
by the performance itself. Live and work in Brooks,

“According
to most sources, Brian Wilson began to encounter serious problems
with Smile around late November 1966. He was by then
beginning to exhibit early signs of depression and paranoia
and it is reported that, during the recording session for the
“Fire” section of the “Elements Suite”
at Gold Star Studios on 28 November, he became irrationally
concerned that the music was responsible for starting several
fires in the neighborhood of the studio.” From the Wikipedia
