What is silence if it is not the absence of sound? 312 presents a new two-part series—Silence (A Surface Excavation). In part two, two artists living in Rudny, Kazakhstan explore physical, or kinetic, silence. In the video, an elderly couple vacationing in Estonia poses perfectly still next to a series of public monuments, waiting for a photograph to be taken. The couple’s stillness mimics the monument’s—each sculpture remains silent.
